The project tells us about the years between 1850 and 1920, which is the most significant period of the movement for women's rights in Russia. Russian feminism originated in the 18th century, influenced by the Western European Enlightenment and the prominent role of women as a symbol for democracy in the French Revolution. However, women started to gain greater freedom, such as the right to work, to vote, and to be educated, only in the 19th century. The historical events and the women who stepped forward for these changes shaped the Russian society at that time, both of which are the centrepiece of this story.
Retrofeminism is divided in 4 chapters: Economical Situation, Professional Development, Revolutionary Movement and Political Voice. Each part includes cards from 5 different categories. There are cards with turning-point events for the feminist movement; quotes of Russian literary writers and political figures; examples of social controversial remarks by prominent people in the Russian society; animated infographics based on historical data; and metaphorical animations showing shifts in society.
